I want to speak to something I see a lot on social media and in the media in general these days. The idea of empowering people. I think it’s a good sentiment and something that rolls off the tongue nicely but what does empowerment really mean? How are we instilling power in each other?
When I worked in marketing there was always a lot of buzzwords floating around. Engagement. Authenticity. Transparency. Again, they all sounded really lovely but how are they actually applied to our own lives?
So I did my usual and started to dissect a bit. Where does our power come from? How do we gain strength, confidence, and trust in our own abilities?
Looking back at my own experiences, the only way I’ve improved any of those qualities, is through courage.
Having the courage to make a change when something isn’t working for you, having that tough conversation, starting that business, pursuing a new path for your health and healing, opening yourself up to a new relationship, trying on a new way of looking at the world, taking that dance class, going on that solo trip, whatever it is; the only way to move through that discomfort and learn to trust yourself is to acknowledge those fears and find something within you that believes whatever’s on the other side is better than what you have now. And if it’s not better, it’s growth. It’s experience and learning. It’s exercising those muscles and forward movement towards a life you can truly be proud of. And it’s assurance that you can try and fail. That you’ll be better for having not tried at all.
Maybe that’s the answer. Before we can empower each other, we need to encourage each other. Instilling confidence in one another that we can face our own obstacles, fight our own battles, and rise over and over again is true power. Courage is the prerequisite to power. Let’s start there.
Life by Design was born out of a need for my own self-healing after decades of unresolved illness. It wasn’t until finding the courage to look within that I discovered it was my own belief system holding me back from experiencing a truly thriving life. We all have access to that thriving life. We just need to rediscover our power and ignite the healing-self. Only then can we unapologetically live a life by our own design.
