Yesterday, I made the tough decision to take @quotifulapp out of the app store for the first time in 5 years. It's in the middle of a complete overhaul (sounds a lot like my personal life 🤔) and will be back this fall with an entirely new form (hoping personal life can follow suit).
As I was redesigning the create tool of the app, the foundation of it’s soul - being able to design your own quotes, mantras, and affirmations - I ran into something that perplexed me for days. Instead of racking my brain like I used to, desperately looking for the answer, I decided to just sit on it for a few. Give it some space. As a result, I did what helps me give a lot of things space in my life and got out in nature. This time on a hike to the top of the highest peak in Griffith Observatory Park with @diana_perkovic.
While we were hiking we found ourselves sharing girl stories, laughing, and exchanging tips about our businesses. I noticed Diana kept asking me about my aesthetic, the visuals I use to tell the story of Life by Design, and my writing. I found myself asking her about her television/media presence, her phenomenal presentation skills, and her ability to so seamlessly speak about what she does and what she believes in. We were both asking each other for advice in the areas we’re lacking.
I realized, we're both extroverted and communicative, but we think differently. I think in images first. Diana thinks in words. Even when it comes to my writing, I have to see it first, really bring myself back to that moment and feel it before I can find the words for it. She's highly verbal, thinking through her process out loud, while I have to call up the visual and convert, making my processing time a bit longer. After discovering this about myself and the way we translate the world around us, I was able to clearly see the answer to my design problem, whether to allow people to start designing with the quote first or the image, the answer is neither - it's a binary process. It has to flow both ways. It has to move with you as the designer. 🌹
Life by Design was born out of a need for my own self-healing after decades of unresolved illness. It wasn’t until finding the courage to look within that I discovered it was my own belief system holding me back from experiencing a truly thriving life. We all have access to that thriving life. We just need to rediscover our power and ignite the healing-self. Only then can we unapologetically live a life by our own design.
